Colon cancer screening

Colon cancer screening – get yourself tested!

Every year, almost 60,000 people in Germany develop colon cancer and 25,000 die of the disease. Yet colon cancer is preventable. The risk of contracting this disease gradually increases with advancing age.

The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is 6%. The good news is that this disease can be almost completely prevented through early detection. Its detection requires a colonoscopy or, alternatively, the use of modern, extremely reliable (immunological) test procedures.

Colon cancer develops via polyps that grow over a very long period. The goal of screening is to detect and remove these polyps at an early stage. This is done via a straightforward procedure following a positive test result during a colonoscopy.

Since the risk of developing the disease increases from the age of 45, screening should begin by then at the latest. The health insurance companies only cover the costs of colon cancer screening for people aged 50 and older. For this reason, we now offer all employees of the SPÄH Group aged 40 and over the opportunity to participate in our annual colon cancer screening campaign. The costs of the laboratory tests are fully covered by SPÄH.
